Day 1

Morning

  • American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar — Explore the war from three essential perspectives -- Union, Confederate and African-American. Learn about the groundbreaking weaponry used during the Civil War. Allow 1 hour.
  • Richmond Battlefield National Park Civil War Visitor Center — Stroll next door where a Park Ranger will orient you to the Region’s surrounding battlefields and introduce the story of Richmond during the Civil War. There is also a presentation on Civil War artillery by historian Mike Gorman. Allow 90 minutes.

Afternoon

  • Fort Harrison Visitor Center — Open June through August, this site highlights the September 1864 capture of Fort Harrison by 3,000 Union infantry. A self-guided walking trail begins here. Allow 60-90 minutes.
  • Drewry’s Bluff — In May 1862, Confederates thwarted an advance by Union gunboats (including the famous Monitor). Enjoy a walking tour through the fort and site of the Confederate Naval Academy.

Day 2

Morning

  • Chimborazo Medical Museum — Chimborazo Hospital was the Civil War's largest medical facility. Hear the vivid stories of the doctors, nurses and more than 75,000 Confederate soldiers who received treatment here. Allow 45 minutes.

Afternoon

  • Petersburg National Battlefield — Highlights the Battle of the Crater and the 10-month siege of Petersburg during the final year of the Civil War. Explore the impressive fortifications of the Crater. Allow 1 hour.
