Itinerary 3: Surviving the Siege
Day 1
Morning
- Pamplin Historical Park - Explore the lives of free and enslaved antebellum Southerners in the context of original historic homes and recreated 19th-century environments. Allow 2 to 4.5 hours.
Afternoon
- Siege Museum - The story of how the people of Petersburg lived before, during and after the Civil War is told through rare artifacts and writings. The museum is housed in the Exchange Building, erected in 1839 as a commodities market and one of the few such surviving buildings in America. Allow 1 to 2 hours.
- Centre Hill Museum - During a guided tour you will learn the Mansion's history, including its role during the Civil War and visits by President Lincoln. Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Day 2
Morning
- Petersburg Courthouse - The official Confederate headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg. During the Siege, both Union and Confederates could see the courthouse clock from the trenches and set their timepieces by it. Allow 15 to 30 minutes.
- The Farmer's Bank- See the press and plates used to print the bank's currency and the scales for weighing gold. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
