Itinerary 1: Richmond Evacuation and Fire

Day 1

Morning

Afternoon

  • Take a walking tour along the Canal Walk from Tredegar east through the original zone burned during the Siege of Richmond. Allow 1 hour.
  • Visit the James River on Brown’s overlook devoted to the 1865 fall of Richmond. (The entrance is near the river under the railroad trestle, just off the main path around the island.) Allow 1 hour.

Day 2

Morning

  • Chimborazo Medical Museum — Chimborazo Hospital was the Civil War's largest medical facility. Hear the vivid stories of the doctors, nurses and more than 75,000 Confederate soldiers who received treatment here. Allow 45 minutes.

Afternoon

  • Oakwood Cemetery The final resting place for 17,000 confederate soldiers, casualties from several battles fought in the Richmond area.
  • Hollywood Cemetery — A large stone pyramid honors 18,000 Confederate soldiers. Among the rolling hills, the visitor will also find the final resting place of Jefferson Davis and J.E.B. Stuart as well as United States Presidents James Monroe, John Tyler and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. Allow 1 hour.
