Learn about Richmond During the Civil War
The story of the Richmond Petersburg Region during the Civil War is one of struggle, courage, perseverance and strength. Few Civil War regions suffered like Richmond and Petersburg. Many of the food-producing areas of the surrounding countryside were devastated by battles and plundering soldiers. Northern and southern armies stripped local farms to feed their soldiers. When food and basic necessities became scarce, families struggled to survive and women assumed new roles in their households and in the community.
The four-year period marking the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War and Emancipation will focus attention on the Region’s stories and its pivotal role in shaping our nation’s history.
