The White House of the Confederacy’s household staff was a diverse group of enslaved African-Americans, free blacks, Irish immigrants and a German florist. This tour will introduce visitors to the servants and describe the roles they played in the daily operation of the house.

“A Visit with Elizabeth Keckley”Elizabeth Keckley, born in Dinwiddie,Virginia in1818, was a former slave turned successful seamstress who is most notably known as being Mary Todd Lincoln’s personal modiste and confident. She was also the author of her autobiography, Behind the Scenes or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House. Join us at Centre Hill Museum on Friday for the Arts!, February 11, 2011at 6:30 pm to learn how Elizabeth Keckley utilized her intelligence, keen business savvy and sewing and design skills to arrange and ultimately buy her freedom (and that of her son George as well), and later enjoyed regular business with the wives of the government elite as her base clientele. Experience her growing friendship and learn of the controversial results of her relationship with Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.
