Veteran's Day Luminary Program at Poplar Grove National Cemetery

Poplar Grove National Cemetery is the resting place of 6,000 Union soldiers who died during the Petersburg Campaign of 1863-1864. Over 6,000 candles will illuminate the soldiers’ graves while bagpipe music plays. Event takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free.

The City of Petersburg Museums will present “Reminiscences of Petersburg: A Woman’s Perspective” Saturday, November 20 at Centre Hill Museum. The special 45 minute tours will take place at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.Costumed interpreters representing different historical eras will portray former residents of the City and will convey different life experiences based on race and social status.Admission for the tour is $5.00 for adults and children twelve and older. Thanksgiving in the Trenches at Petersburg National Battlefield

On the night of Saturday, November 20, 2010, only days before the 146th anniversary of the Siege of Petersburg's Thanksgiving, the public is invited to glimpse into the lives of civilians and soldiers caught up in the great war between the North and the South. Stop 3 at Petersburg National Battlefield will be lit by lanterns and visitors will learn how the sacred Thanksgiving holiday interfaced with a brutal and tragic conflict. Beginning at 6:00 P.M. and repeated at 7:00 and 8:00, visitors will be led through five scenarios ranging from a peaceful but apprehensive home, to a violent battlefield punctuated with artillery fire, winter camps, and sentry posts.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Take a guided stroll through Mid-Lothian Mines and Railroad Park on Sunday, Nov. 21, 11 a.m.-noon, and learn more about the early coal industry at one of the first commercial coal mine operations in North America. Learn about the first railroad, transportation improvements and the impact that coal mining had on the region. The cost of the tour is $8 for adults, seniors and children aged 8 and above.
