Itinerary 3: Bermuda Hundred Campaign
Day 1
Morning
- Appomattox Plantation and Grant's Headquarters - Grant's headquarters radiates the feeling that General Grant will walk thru the door any moment. Visit the plantation that is at the confluence of the Appomattox and James rivers. Walk where President Lincoln and General Grant walked during the last months of the Civil War. Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
- Battery Dantzler - View the Confederate earthworks and see the interpretive signs, photographs and observation deck overlooking the James River. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Fort Stevens - View the Confederate fort and see interpretive signs along the fort trail. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Afternoon
- Fort Wead - The fort had positions for 6 cannons and was never attacked. View the fort and interpretive signs. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Fort Clifton - Located on a high bluff at the junction of the Appomattox River and Swift Creek, the fort controlled navigation on the river north of Petrsburg and was a formidable defensive bastion that wasn't taken by Union forces until the fall of Petersburg on April 3, 1865. Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Day 2
Morning
- Drewry's Bluff - The fort survives intact with a one mile walking trail and numerous exhibits. A viewing platform offers a sweeping view of the James River. Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours .
- Parker's Battery - Boasting a short walking trail through original fortifications and a monument commemorating Parker's "Boy Company", this fort is a must see on the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour.
